However, there are some circumstances where bluffs can be effective in low stakes no limit holdem poker games.
Tentative Opponents
Some players may be playing in the low stakes game because they are on a very limited bankroll. Some signs of this may be:
- A player who buys in for the minimum in an unrestricted buy-in online poker game. For example, the blinds are $.10/$.25. The player buys in for $5, if he loses it, buys in for another $5, even if there are other players at the table with $20 or more. These players are usually looking to minimize risk rather than maximize profit.
- A player who only shows down premium hands. A player who folds a lot and doesn’t commit all his chips without the nuts in this game may be what is called Tight-Weak. They may be uncomfortable with losing even the smallest amounts and therefore are good candidates to steal from.
These types of players may be worth running a bluff on if the play of the hand indicates they may be weak. Be careful though. Player 1 may just be someone who likes to gamble and is looking to push their stack all-in at the first opportunity, which is why they make sure that stack is small, and Player 2 may be a solid, tight aggressive player who just hasn’t found the right spots to make his or her move. Rely on your read over the course of the session to determine what types of players these really are.
Orphan Pots
If there is a scary board and only a few players who don’t seem very interested in the pot, it often pays to take a stab at it. A big overbet is a mistake in these situations. You want to bet just enough to be convincing, but you want to make sure the amount you lose when you get caught is less than the amount you win all the times you don’t.
Shifting Gears
If you have been playing tight for a long time against observant opponents, only showing down big hands, you may get away with a steal if you bet when a scary card comes, such as a flush or straight card. But be wary. Many players in these low stakes no limit Texas holdem games are not that observant, and in these cases this play will not work.
