Low-Stakes Holdem: No-Limit versus Limit
Starting out in no-limit Texas holdem poker can be a bit intimidating. Most of us don’t have the bankroll to play at the high limits we may see on television, in the VIP room of the casino, or even at the far end of the screen on your online poker menu. When you first start playing Texas holdem, or when you’re on a limited bankroll, you’ll probably be looking at the lower stakes games. If you’ve just signed up with a website to get an online poker bonus, these games will stretch those bonuses further, and are a much better way to get a feel for the game than playing free online poker games where nothing is at stake.
When you do sit down at a game, it is key that you understand the difference between a low limit Texas holdem game and a low stakes no-limit holdem game. These are two different types of poker games with different strategic elements, and you need to understand the distinctions when you sit down at the poker table.
Blinds and Bet Sizes
A $2/$4 limit holdem poker game and a no-limit holdem poker games with $2/$4 blinds are two very different animals, and in fact, the no-limit $2/$4 might be considered closer to a middle stakes no-limit game. In the limit game, $4 is the maximum you can bet. In the no-limit game, $4 is the minimum you can bet. You should be able to see very quickly why the $2/$4 no-limit game is a much higher stakes game requiring a much bigger bankroll. You could probably get away with bringing $100 to a $2/$4 limit game, although to be safe you should bring more. Unless you are a fairly skilled player or hit a run of luck right away, $100 is not likely to last you very long in a $2/$4 blind no-limit game. This does not mean you can’t lose $100 fairly quickly at limit or win with $100 in no-limit, it simply means the variance tends to be a bit lower in the limit game. If you’re looking for a low stakes no-limit game, you’re probably looking for blinds of $1/$2 or less.
Player Types
You will probably find more risk takers in your low stakes no-limit holdem game than in a low stakes limit game. Limit players tend to be a bit more risk averse than no-limit ones. This in no way makes them bad players. In fact, players who are looking to play the odds and are content to amass many small victories rather than try to ride big waves looking for a giant score are among the best poker players. Before the latest poker boom, most professional players were the most highly skilled at limit poker. You are unlikely to find many professionals at your low stakes no-limit holdem poker table, which makes it a great place to learn your own weaknesses and how to exploit the poker weaknesses of others.
Strategy
In limit poker, your goal is to win extra bets when you have the best of it and save bets when you don’t, accumulating small advantages that add up over the course of the session. In no-limit, you’re waiting for the opportunity to win a big pot, and trying to avoid the pitfalls of losing one. In your low stakes no-limit holdem games, the pots may never seem to get that big, but you need to consider them relative to the size of the blinds. Winning $20 in a no-limit texas holdem pot may not seem like a big deal, but in a game with $.25 and $.50 blinds, that’s forty big blinds. If you’re skilled enough to make it to a $10/$20 blind no-limit Texas holdem game, that’s the equivalent of $800. Looking at it that way should make winning those pots all the more satisfying.
