Playing Mid-range Pocket Pairs
Mid-range pocket pairs can be a huge profit winner for you if you play them right or they can lead do your downfall. Depending on how you play your pocket pairs will determine your success with them. I have changed my way of thinking on how to play them over the course of time and with added experience. The methods to play them are outlined below:
Pump or dump
You can either get all your chips in the middle preflop or you can fold your pair. Using this method can get you in a lot of trouble and I will explain why. Unless there is a strong bet before you, you are going to have trouble getting callers. The ones that do call you are going to have a better hand in most cases if you are doing it with mid-range pockets.
Till the end
I have seen quite a few people using this method, especially at the casino. I really can’t understand why you would want to use this method. It really just means that you are a calling station when you are holding the pockets. People play them right until the end just in case they hit trips or their opponent is bluffing. I strongly discourage you from using this method because you will find in the long run you will waste far too much money just to see the next card. When you think about it, in a lot of cases you may only have two outs.
Flop and drop
This is the method I use and it has been very profitable for me. I flat call pre-flop and see what the board brings. If it is a low flop I will bet or raise in a lot of cases because you will have an overpair to the board. If there are higher cards I will fold my cards instantly without a second thought to a bet. Many players get caught up here, but for me it is a simple fold. If the flop brings you trips then get set for a big payout. A lot of players don’t see trips coming so they will assume their hand is good. Make sure you extract as much as you possibly can from your opponent because trips pay out well. If you put your opponent on an overpair make sure you play extra aggressive to get the most out of them.
Playing mid-range pocket pair can get you in a lot of trouble. Make decisions easier for yourself by using a method you are comfortable with. Learn this method and use it as a weapon against your opponent.
